Drone Flying

All researchers wishing to fly drones must obey the drone code.

Submit your drone flight requests along with your risk assessments, flight plans and confirmation of insurance to Nigel Fisher: nigel.fisher@admin.ox.ac.uk well in advance of your proposed date of flight to allow time to assess your request. Permission to fly is not given until written consent has been provided.

At the beginning of the day, you must call Brize Norton RAF and Oxford airport air traffic control (ATC)

Information they may require:

1. Description of area or coordinates

  • ForestGEO plot: N 51.7742, W 1.3378
  • Marley wood: N 51.7652, W 1.3103

2. Height of flight

  • Must not exceed 122m (400ft) AGL at any time

3. Weight of drone

  • (DJI Phantom 4: 1.5kg)

4. Name and contact phone number

All approvals to operate are made in accordance with the Terms below: 

  • All drone pilots must adhere to the University's policy on drone flying and the University's guidance
  • All drones must be registered and the necessary training undertaken by the operator as required by the Civil Aviation Authority – further guidance can be found here.
